The Darlington Police Department was established in 1865 for the purpose of providing law enforcement services to the residents of the City of Darlington. While at that time there was only one officer, today, the department is comprised of five full-time officers and five part-time officers who provide 24 hour police services to the city and handle nearly 3,000 calls per year. The fundamental duties of the department are to serve the residents; to safeguard lives and property, to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to respect the constitutional rights of all people to liberty, equality, and justice.
