On Tuesday, September 15, 2009 the Darlington Police Commission and the Darlington Common Council unanimously voted to approve the implementation of a canine unit within the City of Darlington Police Department.  This will be the first ever canine unit within the Darlington Police Department, which was established in 1865.

The implementation process will begin immediately with the department seeking grant funding and donations to fund the program for a seven year period of time, which totals approximately $28,000.  The department's goal is to have the funding in place in time for an October of 2010 deployment.

The canine unit will be used for a number of purposes, including, but not limited to, drug interdiction; school security; public relations; searching for criminals who have fled; tracking lost children, senior citizens and others in need; building searches; crime deterrence; AND MUCH MORE!

GET INVOLVED IN MAKING HISTORY! You and/or your organization are invited to get involved in bringing the first ever canine unit to the Darlington Police Department.  This dog will be the people's dog.  It's sole purpose will be to enhance protection and preserve the well being of the citizens we serve.  There are a number of ways you can get involved.  Of course, the primary need is funding.  We invite you to donate or organize a fund raising event.
